HEIDELBERG, GERMANY

Following a relatively short drive from Frankfurt, the first stop of our tour was in the baroque style city of Heidelberg, Germany. It lies along the River Neckar, and is home to Heidelberg Castle...the first stop of the tour!

After roughly 300 steps (at 3:00am according to our Winnipeg bodies), we reached the top of the hill on which the castle is mounted, and were blessed with a breathtaking view of the old city and bridge. It was another steep climb down, and students spend the next few hours exploring the town, getting their first bite of German food, and spending their first Euros. The Red Sea was visible from anywhere in the city (as you'll see in the video), and passers by were often friendly, asking where we were from and what we were doing with 100 students in Europe. Speaking of which, we have received nothing but compliments about your sons, daughters, relatives, and friends, and we are truly proud to be ambassadors for our school, country, and city! Even though the temperatures were in the mid to high 20s and they'd been awake for 30hrs or more, the students stayed strong. Watch our video to see the end result just before dinner and the choir concert

Founded in 1386, Heidelberg is home to Germany's oldest university, the University of Heidelberg. This was the site of the evening's choral event, when our Eurotour Choir performed with members of Anders, an acapella group from Heidelberg. One of the singers in the group, Gabriel, attended Westwood last year as an exchange student, so it was great for old friends to reconnect in his homeland. The choir did an amazing job, and their voices echoed throughout the seemingly ancient lecture hall. It was truly amazing to think that some of the greatest minds in history had sat through lectures in that very room is truly remarkable. Check out this link of noteworthy members of the University of Heidelberg to see just how prestigious the university is.

After the concert, exhaustion had set in, and at last it was time to head to the hotel in Bad Wimpfen. You can be sure that heads his pillows before uniforms were changed or bags were unpacked. All-in-all it was an incredible first day, and we hope you continue to follow our progress as we make our way to Bad Wimpfen, and all around Europe. Enjoy the day's photos and video!
